As a recovering over packer who is about to go to Switzerland for 12 days with just a carry on, I’m looking for any and all tips and tricks when it comes to packing. Very early in my search, I came across the sudoku packing method, and it definitely intrigued me. So I’m giving it a shot.
What Is The Sudoku Packing Method

If you’ve never heard of it, the sudoku packing method is taking 9 pieces (3 tops, 3 bottoms, and 3 layers), laying them out in a sudoku grid, and being able to mix and match into up to 27 outfit options.
Like the game sudoku, when you lay them out in the correct order (top, layer, bottom - layer, bottom, top - bottom, top, layer), you can connect the outfits vertically, horizontally, diagonally, and even on the corners.
The main trick is to keep with the same color scheme so that everything matches without much trying. It’s an elevated version of your basic capsule wardrobe, basically.
My 9 Pieces For The Sudoku Packing Method
For my 3 tops, I chose simple tanks from Old Navy, fitted tees from Hollister, and a long sleeve top from Hollister. For my 3 bottoms, I chose high waisted, wide leg jeans from Old Navy, Halara yoga pants, and Halara Linen-blend pants. For my 3 layers, I chose a boyfriend linen shirt from Old Navy, my favorite cardigan from Old Navy, and a jacket from Tiktok Shop. (All linked here on my shopmy!)
I know myself, so I know I’ll be using this as the base of my packing and adding a couple things here and there, so I did take the liberty of adding a couple color options for two of the tops when picking my 9 pieces. This just allows me to stretch this concept even further (and allows for a lack of laundry services throughout my trip).
So Should You Try It When You Want To Pack Light?
Conceptually, I knew the sudoku packing method was a solid idea, but it wasn’t until I actually pulled together some of my own pieces and started trying on the outfit options I could make with them that it really struck me how amazing this is for over thinkers. I’m really not worried about having enough ‘options’ each day to be able to decide what I’m feeling like wearing vs feeling stuck with what I decided I’d want to wear on day 6 of my trip weeks before. (Aka the reason I end up overpacking.)

This is only 12 of the ~27 outfits I could make from this collection of pieces! Such a cool way to approach packing light - you should definitely try it!
